Visual Stimulus Comprehension

Visual Stimulus Comprehension

*Visuals can be a picteures on their own or combined with words to convey meaning.
*Symbols,signs,maps,diagrams and storyboards use visuals for a purpose.
*All visuals contain a message. The message could be interpreted as a story,a warning                                                                    ,an advertisement or as information to educate or influence people to buy something or                                                         to take some action.

1.Understanding Symbols and Signs

*Symbols are internationally recognised visuals with a clear message.

*They are understood by people everywhere, no matter what language they speak.
Look at these familiar symbols used at airports, on road signs, etc, and their meanings.

*Signs use symbols, colors, words or numbers to convey a message.

*Read signs can be a warning for driver safety (yellow signs), orders to be followed (red signs),                                          or additional information (green signs).
*A sign with a cross through it signifies something cannot be done.

2.Understanding Maps

*Maps are a diagrammatic representation of an area of land or sea showing physical features                                                 such as cities, roads, buildings, etc.

*These visuals offer a bird's eye view of the location of things on a flat surface.

*Maps may have symbols and a key to explain the symbols.

Study this map. Read the labels and understand what they mean. Read the instructions                                                             next to the map. Study the words in colour.

- My home is opposite the resident.
-The Prince Royal's Collage is on the corner opposite the tennis court.
3.Understanding Diagram
*Diagrams explain how things work, describe a process or different parts of an object.

*They can use arrows to show movement or labels to name the parts.

Study this diagram and the text below on the lifecycle of a butterfly.

A butterfly starts life from an egg. The larvaq or caterpillar hatches from the egg and constantly                                                 feeds on leaves or flowers. The caterpillar loses its old skin many times as it grows.                                                                    It then transforms itself into a pupa or chrysalis; this is called the resting stage.                                                                         Finally, a beautiful adult butterfly emerges. The adult butterfly will continue the cycle.

Study  this  diagram  which  shows  the  parts  of  a  hot  air  bollon.  Complete  the description of its parts given below .

The largest and most colourful part of the balloon is called the 1 Envelope. The topmost part of the balloon has a large hole which is used to deflate the balloon on landing. This is called the 2Parachute valve. The valve seals the hole. The lowest end of the envelope is the 3 Skirt made of flame-resistant material. It helps keep the flame directed straight up into the envelope.To pull the parachute down out of the hole via pulleys, the pilot uses the 4 parachute valve cord that helps the pilot deflate the balloon. 5 Gores are panels of fabric sewn together to form the shape of the balloon.During the fight, the passengers and the pilot stand in the 6 Wicker Basket made from woven willow branches for lightness, strength and flexibility. The 7 Burners, usually made of stainless steel, are connected to the basket with steel cords. It is fuelled by 8 Propane Tanks as propane as gas is an efficient fuel and creates a stronger flame.

The Rainbow Chasers

The Rainbow Chasers

They went to find the rainbow's end
''It's just a filed away'' .

Please let us go . We promise .

We'll be back by the end play!

The teacher smiled , said ,''Actually'' .

It's   raindrops in the sky .

You'll find it doesn't come to earth .

They went to find the   rainbow's end .

Quite certain that they could .

''No,not this field , the next one though !

It's just inside the wood .'

And so it was , and so it was.

A warm , calm floor of light ;

They stepped into its radiance.

And danced form the   rainbow's end.

Deep in a woodland glade ;

Saw colours never seen before ;

Then watched them slowly fade ;

When they came back the teacher teased .

''Well , what's the treasure worth ?'

Serene,wide-eyed , child replied ,

''This time it came to earth .'

selection.
selection.
How to Skim:* Read the title.* Read the introduction or the first paragraph.* Read the first sentence of every other paragraph.* Read any headings and sub-headings.* Notice any pictures, charts, or graphs.* Notice any italicized or boldface words or phrases.* Read the summary or last paragraph.Scanning is a reading technique to be used when you want to find specific information quickly. In scanning you have a question in your mind and you read a passage only to find the answer, ignoring unrelated information.How to Scan:* State the specific information you are looking for.* Try to anticipate how the answer will appear and what clues you might use to help you locate the answer. For example, if you were looking for a certain date, you would quickly read the paragraph looking only for numbers.* Use headings and any other aids that will help you identify which sections might contain the information you are looking for.* Selectively read and skip through sections of the passage.(From College Reading and Study Skills andAcademic Reading and Study Skills for International Students)Excercisehttp://web2.uvcs.uvic.ca/elc/studyzone/570/pulp/hemp1.htm

Be Ready for Our First Class Discussion

Don't forget to read and well prepare for our first class discussion (for 5 points)
This time, we are going to discuss 2 main story:
Unit 1:
The ant and the Grasshopper

One summer day a grasshopper was singing and chirping and hopping about.  He was having a wonderful time.  He saw an ant who was busy gathering and storing grain for the winter.
“Stop and talk to me,” said the grasshopper.   “We can sing some songs and dance a while.”
“Oh no,” said the ant.  “Winter is coming.  I am storing up food for the winter.  I think you should do the same.”
“Oh, I can’t be bothered,” said the grasshopper.  “Winter is a long time off.   There is plenty of food.”   So the grasshopper continued to dance and sing and chip and the ant continued to work.When winter came the grasshopper had no food and was starving.  He went  to the ant’s house and asked, “Can I have some wheat or maybe a few kernels of corn.  Without it I will starve,” whined the grasshopper.“You danced last summer,” said the ants in disgust.   “You can continue to dance.”  And they gave him no food.

Unit 2:
Box of kisses
The story goes that some time ago, a man punished his 3-year-old daughter for wasting a roll of gold wrapping paper. Money was tight and he became infuriated when the child tried to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree. Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift to her father the next morning and said, "This is for you, Daddy." He was embarrassed by his earlier over-reaction, but his anger flared again when he found the box was empty. He yelled at her, "Don’t you know that when you give someone a present, there’s supposed to be something inside it?"
The little girl looked up at him with tears in her eyes and said, "Oh, Daddy, it is not empty. I blew kisses into the box. All for you, Daddy."
The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little girl, and he begged for her forgiveness. It is told that the man kept that gold box by his bed for years and whenever he was discouraged, he would take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who had put it there.
In a very real sense, each of us as humans have been given a gold container filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, friends, family or God. There is no more precious possession anyone could hold.

Fact or Opinion

Fact or Opinion

Because writers don't always say things directly, sometimes it is difficult to figure out what a writer really means or what he or she is really trying to say. You need to learn to "read between the lines" - to take the information the writer gives you and figure things out for yourself.
You will also need to learn to distinguish between fact and opinion. Writers often tell us what they think or how they feel, but they don't always give us the facts. It's important to be able to interpret what the writer is saying so you can form opinions of your own. As you read an author's views, you should ask yourself if the author is presenting you with an established fact or with a personal opinion. Since the two may appear close together, even in the same sentence, you have to be able to distinguish between them.
The key difference between facts and opinions is that facts can be verified, or checked for accuracy, by anyone. In contrast, opinions cannot be checked for accuracy by some outside source. Opinions are what someone personally thinks or how he/she feel about an issue. Opinions by definition are subjective and relative.

Drawing Conclusions

Drawing Consclusion refers to information that is implied or inferred.This means that the information is never clearly stated.

Sometimes a passage may contain ideas that are not stated directly.Then you must draw a conclusion.When you do this,
you decide what facts mean.
